While owning your Cayman Islands holiday, be sure to attend a show by the ‘Barefoot Man’. George Nowak (the Barefoot Man), was born in Germany (or Austria, depending on the source) but has become the maximum amount of an element of the Cayman Islands as numerous locals. They have lived and played there since 1971 after a period of island hopping which included Hawaii along with the Bahamas.
His songs are mostly a risqué parody set to calypso, reggae, country or pop music. For those who have seen the film ‘The Firm’, you would have often heard Barefoot’s music. He wrote the song ‘Money, Money, Money’ and is also singing in the background while plage de la baie du Sud was dancing.
Barefoot not simply writes and performs his own songs, also, he owns the record company that records and sells his CDs (located in most stores on Grand Cayman). He has also branched over to The Bahamas, where among his albums is in the best Ten for 4 years.
His songs include ‘Ship Faced’, ‘Ship Song’, ‘Save the Lap Dance for Me’ and ‘Thong Gone Wrong’. He also sings about Cayman current affairs and wrote ‘The Gay Cruise Liner Song’ following the visit from a Gay Cruise. One reviewer stated how the Barefoot Man won a Grammy Award for ‘Gone Coconutz’, which had been written after 85dexrpky devastating Hurricane Ivan, although I have got been unable to find this album or artist listed in the Grammy Archives.
No Cayman Islands holiday is finished without catching a show with the Barefoot Man. He can be obtained in the Reef Hotel every Tuesday and Thursday night. The Reef is definitely the only 100% beachfront hotel on Grand Cayman.
John has completed the online training course offered by the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism, which included a trip to Grand Cayman and Little Cayman to visit various hotels, sample some of the restaurants and to take part in a selection of sightseeing attractions.
